THE ASCENT OF MT. ELBRUS  FROM THE NORTH
(USING THE WAY THE FIRST PEOPLE HAD CLIMBED THE MOUNT BY IN 1829)

This route is the very way used by Kilar Hashirov (from the expedition of the cavalry general Emanuel) climbing the eastern peak of Elbrus in 1829. There is an inscription written on a stone near the very spot their group had been camping at which informs one of that event.

The North Prielbrusie is a rarely visited region, which circumstance can be explained by its difficulty of access because of the absence of proper roads. It has hardly changed since the times of the first ascent of Mt. Elbrus. You cannot see there great crowds of tourists as you easily can in the southern valleys. Here, near the north feet of the mountain, the famous healing springs Jiley-Su (or otherwise it can be pronounced "Jila-Su" or "Jyly-Su") are situated. If you ask someone from what malady you can be cured using the water of those springs you can be answered that "from every malady".

Here follows a description of the twelve-days program of the travel in the region:

The 1st day. All the participants of the group meet at the Mineralny Vodys' airport. Then follows a transfer of the group to the town of Pyatigorsk (the name means "The town of the five mountains") (25 km from Mineral Waters). There you stay at the hotel "Intourist".
The 2nd day. Excursion-Acclimatization trip in Piatigorsk
After breakfast we departure by local tram to the foot of mount Beshtau ("Five summits" in Balkarian) 1400m. Climb summit of Beshtau. Panoramic point with view of region of Mineralny Vody. After excursion return to Tourist base "Ozerny and preparation to the travel to North Prielbrusie
The 3rd day.
After early breakfast transfer to the start point of the route via Kislovodsk. Approximately 160 km by ground road by off-road truck or jeeps, appr 6 hours - and we are on the glade Jilisu - glade Surkh. Fixing the base camp. Walks in surroundings, bathing in the pools with Narzan. Dinner in the camp
The 4th day. This day is used for getting your first acquaintance with the place. You can have some look around and get view of the glade and of the said springs. This day is also an excursion to the Emanuels' stone planned. Then you have an acclimatizing and practice walk up the slopes of Mt. Soorh.
The 5th day.
The next day you go acclimatizing till "The north Priut" ("priut" means here "a hut" or  "a little hotel"; literally the word "priut" means "a shelter" or "an asylum"). The altitude there is 3700 m. Some part of your luggage you can carry along to this altitude. For the night you'd better get down to the glade.
The 6th day.
An ascent still higher than the "Priut" - till the moraine (3800 m) - is to be made that day. There you can pitch a tent camp. Or else you can stay at the very hotel, at the "Priut", but there are very few places therein, so you are not sure of finding an accommodation.
The 7th day. The group ascends the slope till the Rocks of  Lencz (4780 m) bivouacking there at night. It may also be recommended to walk still higher acclimatizing that day, till the 5000 m altitude. The night is spent at the bivouac on the rocks.
The 8th day.
The following morning the group had better get down to the "mushroom glade" and have some rest. But for the night you have to get back to the high camp (at the Lencz's Rocks).
The 9th day. The day of the very ascent. Waking and getting up are to be at 3 a. m. At 4 a. m. the group is to start. The whole ascent and descent together may take from 8 to 15 hours - that depends on the weather, the condition of the route, the physical state of the participants etc. The night after the ascent is to be spent at the Lencz's Rocks.
The 10th day. This is an extra day ("the reserve day") for the case of bad weather. If the group has managed climbing the mountain the preceding day, this day you can have some rest and get down to the glade of Soorh.
The 11th day.
